Ruins of Third Serrano Adobe!

Ruins of Third Serrano Adobe
Landmark #224 Riverside County Visited: February 4, 2012 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque and foundations of Don Leandro Serrano’s third adobe!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Don Leandro Serrano set out orchards and vineyards and cultivated some of the fertile lands of the Temescal Valley. In the 1840s he built his third adobe, which the Serrano family occupied until 1898, on the well-traveled road between San Diego and Los Angeles.

OTHER TIDBITS: Don Leandro was the first non-native occupant of Riverside County, and he was in charge of Rancho Temescal (Sweathouse Ranch)! When Don Leandro passed on, Spanish law dictated that these 20,000 acres should be passed on to his wife, Josefa, but when the US took over California, they did not recognize her ownership and took over Rancho Temescal. They then sold the land for $3 million to speculators, while the Serranos finished their days in poverty!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of E Clampus Vitus, Billy Holcomb Chapter!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
Where is this place? LISTED DIRECTIONS:
NE corner of I-15 and Old Temescal Road

ANNOTATIONS:
This was confusing! Old Temescal Road isn’t anywhere near this spot! Temescal Canyon Road, on the other hand, is! It crosses I-15 twice, and the plaques are at the northern crossing, just east of I-15! There’s a big dirt patch where people park their trucks, and the plaques are located here!
