Mission San Rafael Arcángel!

Mission San Rafael Arcángel
Landmark #220 Marin County Visited: May 9, 2012 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The refurbished 20th mission (of 21) founded by Padres Vincente de Sarría and Luis Gil y Taboada!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The San Rafael Arcángel Mission, 20th in the chain of the 21 California missions, was established in 1817 by the Franciscan Order. After the “decree of secularization” in 1834, the buildings gradually fell into ruin. The mission was reconstructed on the original site in 1949.

OTHER TIDBITS: This mission was intended to be an asistencia, or hospital, but it became a mission in 1822. For the health of its patients, the padres built the mission inland at a site the locals called Anaguani, away from the fog and wind of San Francisco! It survived an attack by Chief Marin and Chief Quintin in February of 1829 but was razed in 1870 to make way for a new church!

This mission takes its name from the Archangel Raphael, who is only the third archangel mentioned by name in the Bible. He was known for his healing powers, so it’s fitting that he should be the namesake for this mission! Raphael is also known as the patron saint of the blind and the travelers, of happy meetings and of healers!
