Bass Hill!

Bass Hill
Landmark #148 Shasta County Visited: May 11, 2012 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque with a long list of stagecoach driver names!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: On the summit of Bass Hill a remnant of the California-Oregon stage road crosses the Pacific Highway and descends to the Pit River. Because this was a favorite “holdup” spot in stagecoach days, a marker has been placed there in memory of W. L. Smith, division stage agent of the California and Oregon Stage Company, and of the pioneer stage drivers along this road.

OTHER TIDBITS: Williamson Lyncoya Smith was actually the uncle of Mae Helene Boggs, whose artwork is prominently featured at Shasta State Historic Park! It’s not clear whether Mr. Smith was ever the target of a robbery, but his fellow driver, Horace Williams, got robbed here twice by Black Bart, to the tune of $60 and $0.35!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with the Shasta Historical Society!
  • Donate to the Shasta Historical Society!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
