Landmark #507 Inyo County Visited: Sept. 29, 2012 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque just outside a common graveyard for 16 Lone Pine earthquake victims!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: On March 26, 1872, a major earthquake shook Owens Valley, nearly destroying the town of Lone Pine. About fourteen of its victims (the exact number is not known) were interred in a common grave, enclosed by this fence.

OTHER TIDBITS: The earthquake struck at 2:30 AM, killing 27 people in their sleep and leveling 52 of Lone Pine’s 59 buildings! Estimated to have been a 7.8 on the Richter scale (developed some 60 years later), it was felt as far north as Oregon and as far south as Tijuana, Mexico! A thousand aftershocks occurred over the next two months!
