Fort Bragg!

Fort Bragg
Landmark #615 Mendocino County Visited: August 2, 2014 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? Fort Bragg is a town built upon Mendocino County’s first military post!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The fort was established in this vicinity June 11, 1857 by 1st Lieutenant (later Brigadier General) Horatio Gates Gibson, 3rd Artillery, U.S. Army, who named it in honor of his former company commander, Braxton Bragg, later General, Confederate States of America. The fort was abandoned in October 1864.

OTHER TIDBITS: The plaque leaves out why the fort was here in the first place! The US Bureau of Indian Affairs had set up a reservation here for the local Pomo and wanted a military presence here to maintain order! Ultimately, they realized that they didn’t really need to maintain order and left after five years! The Mendocino Indian Reservation was then dissolved 24 years later!

Once this land opened to settlers, it became a hub for logging and fishing. In fact, this town gave rise to the Fort Bragg Redwood Company, which later became the Union Lumber Company, which is still around today!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:
