J.C. Penney Historic District!

J.C. Penney Historic District
What is it? This is the mother store of the J.C. Penney chain!
What makes it historical? James Cash Penney had come to the Rocky Mountains for his health and begun work for a dry goods store, called Golden Rule! He saved up enough money to start his own store in Kemmerer, Wyoming on April 14, 1902, and it only took 22 years for J.C. Penney’s business to grow into 500 stores, 71 years to reach 2,053! For many years, it was the largest retailer of clothes and home goods in the world!
How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Lincoln County Historical Society!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
