Swift’s Stone Corral!

Swift's Stone Corral
Landmark #238 Colusa County Visited: Sept. 25, 2014 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? The stone corral of Granville P. Swift!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The original owner and builder of this stone corral was Granville P. Swift, a native of Kentucky. In 1847 Swift began ranching in Stone Creek Valley in Colusa County. In 1850 he and his partner Frank Sears needed a corral and, as there was no timber in the surrounding country, they built one from the flat stones that were scattered over the area.

OTHER TIDBITS: Before he turned to ranching, Mr. Swift was an avid hunter and trapper, nephew to Nat Walker and grand-nephew to Daniel Boone! He was a leader in the Bear Flag Revolt that captured General Mariano Vallejo and opened up northern California to American control!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Colusi County Historical Society!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
Where is this place? LISTED DIRECTIONS:
1,000 ft S of Maxwell-Sites Rd
6.4 mi W of Maxwell, CA 95955

ANNOTATIONS:
This is something you’ll have to measure out! 6.4 miles from Maxwell, you’ll come to a grove of trees and a cluster of white, barred gates! If you walk just west of the trees and look south from the road, you can see the corral nestled into the hillside! You can’t (legally) visit the corral, though!

From Los Angeles: ~461mi (742km) — 7.7hrs
From Sacramento: ~74mi (120km) — 1.3hrs
From San Diego: ~577mi (929km) — 9.7hrs
From San Francisco: ~129mi (208km) — 2.2hrs

When should I go? You can look for the corral any time you like, but it’s on private property! I wouldn’t suggest hopping any fences!
