| What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Established in 1850, its prospects were bright. The second largest town in the county, it had deep water communication with San Francisco all year round, an advantage not possessed by any other town in the county except Stockton. The floods of 1862 destroyed the town.
OTHER TIDBITS: Mokelumne City had about 100 lots for sale, and so strategic was its location at the time that some of its lots sold for $1000! At its height, the town housed three stores, two hotels, a blacksmith shop, a saloon, a warehouse, and 23 houses! Only the hotel survived the flood and was turned into a barn! |
