The Peter L. Traver Building!

The Peter L. Traver Building
Landmark #466 Calaveras County Visited: May 9, 2015 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The Old Timers Museum in Murphys!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Constructed by Peter L. Traver in 1856, this is the oldest stone building in Murphys. Its iron shutters and sand on the roof protected it from the fires of 1859, 1874, and 1893. It served as a general store, a Wells Fargo office, and later a garage.

OTHER TIDBITS: This building was slated for demolition but was saved by Dr. Coke Wood in 1949! Now it is called the Old Timers Museum and is full of artifacts from the mining years and from local Native American tribes, all donated by the community!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with the Murphys Old Timers Museum!
  • Become a member of E Clampus Vitus, Grub Gulch Chapter!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
