Yankee Jim’s!

Yankee Jim's
Landmark #398 Placer County Visited: July 11, 2015 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque in the community of Yankee Jim’s!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Gold was discovered here in 1850 by “Yankee Jim,” a reputed lawless character, and by 1857 the town was one of the most important in Placer County. The first mining ditch in the county was constructed here by H. Starr and Eugene Phelps. Colonel William McClure introduced hydraulic mining to this area in June of 1853.

OTHER TIDBITS: Yankee Jim Robinson was a notorious horse thief who just didn’t know how to hide his loot! He built his corral of stolen horses right on top of the richest gold mine in the vicinity! That led him to be ousted from his lair and flee to the southern part of the state, where he was arrested and hanged for his crimes at the Whaley House in San Diego!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with Placer County Museums!
  • Become a member of the Placer County Historical Society!
