What is it? The Salty Dawg Saloon is a famous bar on Homer Spit that has its whole inside covered in dollar bills!
What makes it historical? This was one of the first cabins built on the Homer Spit in 1897! Before it was a saloon, it was Homer’s first post office, a railroad station, a grocery store, and a coal mining office! In the 1940s, Chuck Abbott made it an office for the Standard Oil Company before converting it into a saloon in 1957, two years before Alaska became a state! It survived the “Good Friday” Earthquake of 1964 and moved to its present position, where it still serves a wide assortment of drinks to a wide assortment of salty seafarers!
