What is it? |
Lowell Observatory is a campus of extraterrestrial observation! |
What makes it historical? |
This is one of the oldest observatories in the country! Built in 1894 by Percival Lowell to study Mars, it has since been the place where discoveries that rocked our world were made! In 1912, V.M. Slipher discovered that galaxies were very quickly moving away, leading to the understanding that our universe is expanding! Planet X, later called Pluto, was discovered here on February 18, 1930! In 1963, to prepare for the first Apollo mission, scientists and astronauts worked together at the observatory to create the first lunar maps, so the crew would have an idea of what they were in for! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- Volunteer with the Lowell Observatory!
- Donate to the Lowell Observatory!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
