Hayes Mansion!

Hayes Mansion
Landmark #888 Santa Clara County Visited: August 28, 2016 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The Hayes Mansion is now a hotel and resort!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Jay Orley and Everis A. Hayes built this Mission Revival style mansion, designed by George W. Page in 1904. The Hayes brothers were early San Jose Mercury publishers, prominent valley politicians, and were actively involved in establishing the Santa Clara Valley fruit industry. The mansion consists of 62 rooms, 11 fireplaces, and was paneled in over a dozen different woods.

OTHER TIDBITS: The Hayes family came to California from Wisconsin, following their mother, Mary Folsom Hayes (Chynoweth). At 18, she suddenly received “The Power,” which helped her heal a declared 7,000 people of all kinds of maladies, and locate some hard-to-find iron mines in which her sons had invested! She was not, however, able to heal either her first husband, Anson Hayes, who died of a heart attack in 1873, or her second husband, Thomas Chynoweth, who died of epilepsy in 1891.

Mrs. Chynoweth set up her True Life Church in San Jose, where her sons combined the San Jose Herald and San Jose Mercury into the San Jose Mercury Heraldin 1901 to give them a platform to fight against Johnny McKenzie, the corrupt political boss who acted as liason between local government and the Southern Pacific Railroad!

This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
