Arizona State Capitol!

Arizona State Capitol
What is it? It’s the Arizona State Capitol Building!
What makes it historical? This is where Arizona’s capital settled after moving 3-4 times! The territory was split in two during the Civil War with the Confederates claiming the southern part with Tucson as its capital and the Union claiming the north with the capital at Prescott! After the war, the capital settled in Tucson in 1867, moved back to Prescott in 1879, and finally settled in Phoenix in 1889, because it was directly between the two other locations!

Originally this building was supposed to be a replica of the US Capitol building in Washington, DC, but the territory couldn’t afford it. Instead, it has a smaller copper dome with two wings for House and Senate and draws from Federal and Greco-Roman architecture styles. Completed in 1901, it’s also the only state capitol that doesn’t have a cornerstone!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with the Arizona Capitol Museum!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
