Newspaper Rock!

Newspaper Rock
What is it? Newspaper Rock is a huge wall of incredible petroglyphs!
What makes it historical? The characters etched into the face of Newspaper Rock are very mysterious! They were added gradually from ancient times to about 1300 AD, with more recent additions at the turn of the 20th century. There are lots of animals—bighorn sheep, horses, bison, and flying squirrels—and there are mysterious six-toed footprints as well! Some modern Utes believe that the first symbols on this panel weren’t made by humans at all, but by a spirit setting a place for humans to commune with the spirit world!
How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with the Bureau of Land Management!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
