Landmark #310 | Ventura County | Visited: March 20, 2011 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | The refurbished 9th mission (of 21) founded by Father Junípero Serra! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This mission, established in 1782, was the ninth and the last to be dedicated by Father Junípero Serra. The first chapel and church were destroyed, the present mission church was begun in 1793 and completed in 1809.
OTHER TIDBITS: This mission was named in honor of St. Bonaventure, a 13th-century Franciscan friar and Scholastic doctor. He is said to have asked papal emissaries, bringing him the title and hat of a Cardinal from Rome, to set the hat on a tree branch until he was finished washing dishes! While the mission wasn’t founded on his feast day, like most Spanish cities in California, his name may have been chosen as a sign of “buona ventura,” or “good fortune!” This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
