Landmark #147 | Los Angeles County | Visited: August 14, 2011 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The mansion and grounds of former State Senator, Phineas Banning! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: General Phineas Banning, State Senator and pioneer in the development of transportation in Southern California, built this house in the 1850s, soon after founding the town of Wilmington. He and his family lived here until his death in 1885. In 1927 the property was deeded to the city.
OTHER TIDBITS: An adventurer at heart, Phineas Banning left home at age 13 and walked 30 miles to work for his brother in Philadelphia. At 21, he moved west, where he made his fortune in staging and, through intrigue and political meneuvering, led the way for the Port of Los Angeles to come into being! This, of course, completely revolutionized the development of Los Angeles into the major city we know today! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
