Landmark #383 | Los Angeles County | Visited: August 14, 2011 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | Nothing! Nothing but a street intersection! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This adobe was built in 1818. Dolores had trouble getting his land title cleared, so he took a trip to Monterey to get the matter definitely settled and, on his return trip, he was shot with an arrow by a hostile Indian at Mission La Purísima Concepción.
OTHER TIDBITS: José Sepúlveda was the cousin of Cristobal Dominguez, heir to the Rancho San Pedro, the first private Spanish land grant in Alta California. When the manager of the Dominguez estate gave Sepúlveda the right to graze his cattle in what is now Rancho Palos Verdes, Dominguez was furious and took the matter all the way to the governor’s office to have Sepúlveda expelled! Ultimately, Dominguez won the quarrel since dead men can’t file suit, but he never again set foot on the rancho, preferring to stay in his cozy home in San Diego until he died! |
