What is it? |
Friends of the LA River (FOLAR) aims to restore the Los Angeles River from a cement-covered “flood control channel” to an actual river. They not only host annual trash cleanups and re-vegetation sessions, but they also work with local communities to create bike pathways and kayaking opportunities around this important river! |
What makes it wonderful? |
As it is now, the Los Angeles River is a teeming cesspool of garbage and industrial chemicals. When I volunteered at the FOLAR River Cleanup, we were warned not to go in the water with open cuts because of the high amount of bacteria! FOLAR’s mission is to reverse that, to bring greenery back to the river, reduce (and eventually cease altogether) the pollution flow that is dumping into the ocean, and make the river itself a place for people and animals to enjoy! Bettering the environment is, invariably, wonderful! |
