Frémont Peak!

Frémont Peak
Landmark #181 San Benito County Visited: October 1, 2011 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque marking the distant site of one of John C. Frémont’s camps. The site is still there, but about 5 miles away!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: On March 6, 1846, Captain John C. Frémont built a fort here on Gabilan (Gavilan) Peak (Frémont Peak). He unfurled his colors and for four days awaited the attack of a force of Californians. The battle did not materialize by the night of March 9, and Frémont broke camp and departed for Oregon.

OTHER TIDBITS: That pretty well sums it up!
