New Idria Mine!

New Idria Mine
Landmark #324 Monterey County Visited: October 1, 2011 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque that tells about the distant New Idria quicksilver mine!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Named for Idria Mine in Austria, the New Idria ranks among the most famous quicksilver mines of the world. Mission fathers, before American occupation, made assays and determined the ore to be cinnabar. Mining began in the 1850s, and in 1881 between two and three hundred men were employed.

OTHER TIDBITS: Cinnabar ore is composed of mercury sulfide! Mercury was used for years to extract gold from loose sediment and became highly important during the Gold Rush years!
