What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The Castro Adobe is an outstanding example of Monterey Colonial architectural styling. The adobe functioned as a regional social center due to the importance of its location as the governing seat of the Castro family rural empire, which reached across seven land grants to include over a quarter of a million acres.
OTHER TIDBITS: Juan José Castro was the son of Jose Joaquin Castro, who was one of the original settlers on the Anza expedition! Rancho San Andres stretched from Monterey Bay to Corralitos and from the Pajaro River to Aptos, about 8,800 acres! The Castros’ main source of income was raising cattle, but they also owned a wharf where they charged folks to ship lumber overseas! |
