What is it? | This walnut tree is still standing after over 100 years! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Planted in 1907 by George Weinshank and assistants under the direction of Professor Ralph Smith as part of an experimental planting for the University of California Experiment Station, this tree stands as a monument to the early cooperation of the state educational system with local walnut industry.
OTHER TIDBITS: The tree is a cross between an English walnut and a black walnut, a hybridization originally created by Luther Burbank and so named because it grows much more quickly and vigorously than either of its parents! This one has a 100-foot spread! |
