Landmark #966 | Los Angeles County | Visited: December 4, 2011 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The amazing beachside home of Merritt and Rhoda Adamson! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Designed by Stiles O. Clements in 1929, this Spanish Colonial Revival home contains the best surviving examples of decorative ceramic tile produced by Malibu Potteries. During its short existence from 1926 to 1932, Malibu Potteries made an outstanding contribution to ceramic art in California through its development and production of a wide range of artistic and colorful decorative tile. The home was built for Merritt Huntley Adamson and Rhoda Rindge Adamson, daughter of Frederick Hastings Rindge and May Knight Rindge, last owners of the Rancho Malibu Spanish grant.
OTHER TIDBITS: It was May Knight Rindge who founded Malibu Potteries, having failed to find oil on her property but instead discovered an abundance of red clay! She fought for 20 years to keep Malibu private and road-free, but her efforts came to naught with the 1926 opening of that classic American road, the Pacific Coast Highway! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
