Angeles National Forest!

The Angeles National Forest
Landmarks #717 & #717-2 Los Angeles & San Bernardino Counties Visited: December 11, 2011 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque marking the extension of the Angeles National Forest into both Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The first national forest in the State of California and second in the United States, Angeles National Forest was created by proclamation of President Benjamin Harrison on December 20, 1892. The first name given to the forest, “‘San Gabriel Timberland Reserve,” was changed to “San Gabriel National Forest” March 4, 1907 and then to “Angeles National Forest” on July 1, 1908.

OTHER TIDBITS: Angeles National Forest also has one of the most beautiful drives in Southern California: the Angeles Crest Highway! Stretching from Montrose all the way to Palmdale, it flies through chaparral, high conifers, and down to desert with astounding vistas all along the way! It’s a side of Southern California that isn’t necessarily promoted, but it’s well worth exploring!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Buy an Adventure Pass and contribute toward site maintenance, sign design, and other visitor services!
  • Volunteer with the Forest Service!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
