What is it? |
The California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is North America’s largest bird of prey with a wingspan of 9 1/2 feet! They can also live up to 50 years, making them the longest-lived raptor in the world! |
What makes it wonderful? |
In 1987, California condors went extinct in the wild! There were 22 individuals left in existence, all captured and brought into captive breeding programs. Now, thanks to diligent efforts of zoologists across the country, the condors have returned from the brink of extinction and now number over 400! That’s not to say they don’t still face threats. For instance, a lot of condors are getting lead poisoning by scavenging on animals that have been shot with lead bullets! I sure hope that eating death doesn’t bring death upon these magnificent birds! |

Where is this place? |
California condors have a huge range! Some places that they frequent regularly include Grand Canyon National Park, Pinnacles National Park, Big Sur, and the Angeles National Forest! However, the one I encountered in the wild was on the Angel’s Landing trail in Zion National Park! |
