| What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Formally established on September 17, 1776, the San Francisco Presidio has been used as a military headquarters by Spain, Mexico, and the United States. It was a major command post during the Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and the Korean War, and remains a symbol of United States authority in the Pacific.
OTHER TIDBITS: The Presidio was founded by members of the Anza Expedition of 1776, who had marched all the way from Sonora, Mexico! It quickly fell to disrepair and was never a well-supplied outpost under Spanish or Mexican rule. In fact, General Vallejo abandoned the post and moved to Sonoma in 1835, and the adobe walls fell to ruin. It wasn’t until the Americans took over during the Bear Flag Revolt that anyone saw fit to repair the adobe walls! Starting in the 1890s, the Presidio served as an outpost for patrolling the newly created national parks of California and for sending soldiers, including the four Buffalo Soldier regiments, to war across the Pacific! Here, the Army helped hand out supplies after the 1906 Earthquake and made preparations for a Japanese mainland invasion! Here, also, at Crissy Field, the first transcontinental dawn-to-dusk flight landed successfully in 1924! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
