Landmark #880 | Solano County | Visited: February 19, 2012 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The refurbished home of Joseph Fischer! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In 1849, Joseph Fischer, a Swiss immigrant, came to Benicia. After joining a butcher partnership, Fischer purchased this lot on July 1, 1858 and moved the house, reputed to be an old hotel, onto it. The building, an outstanding example of East Coast Federalist styling, illustrates architectural diffusion during the Gold Rush.
OTHER TIDBITS: Lots left out of this description! Mr. Fischer was an entrepreneur who owned a butcher shop, a ranch, and the sandstone quarry that produced the base of the State Capitol building! He bought and refurbished portions of a fire-damaged hotel into a home for his family! Wondering where the “Hanlon” comes from? Joseph’s three granddaughters, all with the last name, Hanlon, inherited the house from their grandpa, switched the power source from kerosene to electricity, and planted lots of drought-tolerant plants in the garden! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
