Landmark #917 | Marin County | Visited: February 19, 2012 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | This brick kiln is now a Melting Pot restaurant! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This brick kiln on the San Quentin Peninsula is the only surviving structure of the Remillard Brick Company, once the largest brick manufacturer on the Pacific Coast. During its 103 years of operation, its bricks were used to rebuild Ghirardelli Square, the Palace Hotel, and other San Francisco structures after the 1906 earthquake.
OTHER TIDBITS: The Remillard Brick Company was founded by three brothers, Peter, Hilaire, and Edward, who first found a clay deposit near Oakland, then had to move up to Santa Venetia after that clay had been depleted. One never really thinks of striking it rich on clay, but these brothers sure did! Of course, they did get a boost from Mother Nature! This landmark is also on the National Register of Historic Places! |
