Site of First Protestant Church!

Site of First Protestant Church
Landmark #175 Solano County Visited: February 19, 2012 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque in Benicia City Park!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: On April 15, 1849, the Reverend Sylvester Woodbridge, Jr., organized the first Presbyterian Church of Benicia, the first Protestant church established in California with an ordained resident pastor. The church was disbanded in 1875.

OTHER TIDBITS: Reverend Woodbridge was also one of the founding members of Benicia Seminary, which became Mills College, the first women’s college west fo the Rockies!

The reason a marker is all that’s left of this church is because of the controversy that surrounded the church’s siding with the Union during the Civil War! I’m not sure if that adherence was in doubt or if people didn’t like that a church would pick sides in a war!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West!
  • Donate to the Native Daughters of the Golden West!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
