What is it? | The Victorian mansion that housed thirteen governors of California! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This mansard-styled Victorian house was built for Albert Gallatin in 1877. Acquired by the State, it served as the first official Governor’s residence, Governor George C. Pardee and his family moved in during November 1903. It was home for 13 governors over a span of 64 years.
OTHER TIDBITS: The first governor to live here was George Pardee in 1903, and the last was Ronald Reagan, who moved out after three months in 1967 due to fire concerns! Anything that was bought with state money ahd to stay on the property, so the interior houses an eclectic mix of tastes and fashions spanning six decades! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
