A monument marking the place where Roland tried to smash his sword upon dying! |
What makes it historical? |
According to legend, the great knight, Roldán (Roland), nephew to Charlemagne, was ambushed by Basque guerillas in 778 AD on his way home from conquering Pamplona! Slain in battle, he tried to smash his sword, Durandarte on a rock but instead succeeded only in splitting the rock! This monument marks that spot! |
