What is it? |
The wine fountain at the Bodega de Irache is just that: a free, all-you-can-drink wine fountain! |
What makes it historical? |
The Bodegas Irache (Iratxe in the Basque language) have been serving wine to tired Pilgrims since 1891, the idea being that the wine gives strength and courage to Pilgrims en route to Santiago! The vineyards here have produced fine wine since the bodega was a monastery, Santa María la Real, built in the 2nd century AD! This monastery was the very first hospital for Pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago! The fountain, however, was only built in 1991! |
HOW CAN I HELP KEEP IT HISTORICAL? |
IT’S EASY!
- You can buy a bottle of wine and contribute toward site maintenance, sign design, and other visitor services!
- You can be a responsible visitor! That means respecting the signs and pathways and treating all structures and artifacts with respect! After all, they’ve endured a lot already to make it into the present! They’ll need our help to make it to the future!
