What is it? |
This was the hill where the legendary battle between Roldán and Ferragut took place! |
What makes it historical? |
In the late 8th century AD, somewhere between the battle in Villamayor de Monjardin and his death in Roncesvalles, our hero, Roldán, decided to go on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela! When he arrived at the castle of Nájera, an Islamic giant named Ferragut, who lorded over the castle, challenged Roldán to a duel that lasted two days and nights! At the dawn of the third day, Ferragut fell on top of Roldán, who stabbed him in the bellybutton! Ferragut’s followers hustled out of Nájera! |
