El Canal de Castilla!

El Canal de Castilla
What is it? El Canal de Castilla is a 207 km canal built across the region of Castilla y León!
What makes it historical? Fernando VI initiated the construction of the Canal on July 16, 1753 to improve the flow of agricultural goods within Castilla. Over the next 96 years, the channel expanded 207 kilometers from Alar del Rey to Valladolid! By the time boats took to the channel in 1849, the nearby railroad had just commenced operation, making the channel completely obsolete! Now, it is primarily a rafting destination for tourists. Now that’s a change of channel!
HOW CAN I HELP KEEP IT HISTORICAL? IT’S EASY!

  • You can pay the entrance fee at the museum and contribute toward site maintenance, sign design, and other visitor services!
  • You can be a responsible visitor! That means respecting the signs and pathways and treating all structures and artifacts with respect! After all, they’ve endured a lot already to make it into the present! They’ll need our help to make it to the future!
How do I find it? This portion of the Canal is on the camino, about half a mile ahead of the town of Frómista! If you want to visit the museum, though, it’s all the way in Palencia on Calle Mayor between Calles de los Caños and Calle de San Juan!

From Barcelona: ~424mi (683km) — 7.1hrs
From Madrid: ~179mi (289km) — 3hrs
From Sevilla: ~411mi (662km) — 6.9hrs
From Santiago de Compostela: ~284mi (458km) — 4.8hrs

When should I go? You can visit stretches of the Canal any time you wish, but if you want to tour the museum, it’s open October 1 through April 30, Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM! From May 1 until September 30, it’s open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM!
