Landmark #234 | Sonoma County | Visited: May 9, 2012 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | Luther Burbank’s home and garden are open for wandering and tours! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In this garden Luther Burbank wrought with living plants to bring to the world greater fertility, wealth, and beauty, developing new varieties that produced better fruits and more beautiful flowers.
OTHER TIDBITS: Mr. Burbank was a friend of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, who launched a horticultural revolution! During his 50 years in Santa Rosa, he introduced 800 new varieties of plants, turning plant breeding into a modern science! You may recognize the names of some of his plant creations, like the Burbank potato, elephant garlic, paradox hybrid walnut tree, and Santa Rosa plum (which made plums in general a worldwide industry)! After cross-pollinating four types of daisies, Mr. Burbank produced the Shasta daisy, one of the most popular garden flowers in America! He even had livestock in mind with his creations, producing a spineless prickly pear hybrid to feed livestock living in the desert! He had such a blossoming career that California celebrates Arbor Week from March 7-14 in his honor! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
