What is it? | A plaque overlooking Humboldt Harbor! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Captain Jonathan Winship made the first recorded entry into Humboldt Bay by sea in June 1806, and Josiah Gregg’s party visited the bay in 1849. By 1850 the Laura Virginia Association had founded Humboldt City, Union (Arcata), Bucksport, and Eureka – in subsequent years, the bay became a major North Coast lumber port and shipbuilding center.
OTHER TIDBITS: Captain Winship was sailing aboard the O’Cain, which was part of a joint business venture between him, his brother, and the Russian-American Fur Company. They didn’t record the location of the bay, so it was forgotten until gold was discovered in what is now Trinity County! That brought the Laura Virginia north along the coast and ultimately into Humboldt Harbor! First mate, H.H. Buhne, was the first to sail ashore, and four days later, the crew founded Warnersville, the county’s first town! Warnersville was named after Captain R.V. Warner of the brig Isabel, and the bay was named after naturalist, Alexander von Humboldt! This harbor became an important resource for supplying the landlocked mining and logging operations, and for a fishing industry out upon the waves! |
