Landmark #131 | Shasta County | Visited: May 10, 2012 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | The town is underneath Whiskeytown Reservoir, so there’s not much to see here, except the ruins of an old store! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Settled by gold miners in 1849, the town was first called Whiskey Creek for the stream on which it was located, but later the name was changed to Whiskeytown. A barrel of whiskey lost off a pack mule christened the stream with the popular drink of that day. The town is inundated by Whiskeytown Reservoir.
OTHER TIDBITS: Not only is the origin of Whiskeytown’s name a source of controversy, but for almost a century, it was considered unacceptable for the name of the community’s post office! This was a very rich mining area, where miners were able to pull out $50 in gold ($1,275.50 in 2012) per day! |
