What is it? | William B. Ide State Historical Park! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: General Ide came to California with his family in 1845. Ide helped organize the revolt against the Mexican mandate requiring Americans to leave California, and was the first and only President of the California Republic, under Bear Flag Party proclamation.
OTHER TIDBITS: Trained carpenter, William B. Ide, and his family arrived at Sutter’s Fort on October 25, 1845. Whether he was naturally humorless or not, he was the one who busted in on General Mariano Vallejo’s merry get-together in June of 1846 to arrest the Mexican general! It was General Ide who drafted the proclamation declaring California the Bear Flag Republic! Now, this may come as a surprise, but this adobe home never actually belonged to William B. Ide! His land was further downriver! This adobe was built in 1852 by Abraham M. Dibble, owner of Bluffton, and is the only remaining Gold Rush era adobe still standing in the north Sacramento River Valley! This land changed hands over 20 times before becoming a state park, a feat only accomplished through its loose affiliation with General Ide! |
