What is it? | A house with Lola’s name and a wooden marker on it! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Lola was born in Limerick, Ireland on July 3, 1818, as María Dolores Eliza Rosanna Gilbert. After living in England and on the continent, Lola came to New York in 1851 and settled in Grass Valley in 1852. It was here she built the only home she ever owned and became friends with Lotta Crabtree, who lived up the street. Lola died January 17, 1861 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, New York.
OTHER TIDBITS: Wow, this doesn’t really even say what Lola did! After growing up in India and going to school in England and Scotland, she became a “Spanish” dancer known for her beauty, grace, and liaisons! She had flings with the likes of Franz Liszt, Alexandre Dumas, and Louis I of Bavaria, who gave her a castle but lost his crown in the process! She was married three short times, and after the third, when she arrived in Grass Valley, her career and health were already on the downswing and she devoted the rest of her short life to philanthropy and mentoring Lotta Crabtree! |
