Landmark #490 | San Bernardino County | Visited: June 9, 2012 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | This is still a winery, though now called The Wine Tailor! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Established by Tiburcio Tapia, to whom the Cucamonga Rancho was granted March 3, 1839, by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado of Mexico.
OTHER TIDBITS: Señor Tapia was one of the few Mexican rancheros to diversify from herding cattle and enter the wine business! It was a small business that was later expanded upon by John Rains in 1859, up to 125,000 vines! This later became a popular stop for westward-bound travelers on Route 66, and at its height, the Cucamonga Valley housed 50 wineries! Today, though, the wineries have been bulldozed and replaced by residences and shopping areas. |
