Landmark #994 | San Bernardino County | Visited: June 9, 2012 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The library is still open! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Albert K. Smiley, a leader of the city’s library movement, donated this building and park to the citizens of Redlands in 1898. Through his generosity, Redlands was given one of California’s few privately funded libraries of that era. In 1906, he also contributed a wing, built to blend with the original design for this outstanding Mission Revival library.
OTHER TIDBITS: While most of the country celebrates St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, the city of Redlands celebrates the birthday of its “patron saints,” Albert and Alfred Smiley, by planting their favorite flowers, pansies, in the library flower beds and beyond! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
