What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Kimberly Crest, constructed in 1897, is an excellent example of Chateauesque architecture. Near the residence is a Chateauesque-style carriage house. Terraced Italian gardens designed in 1908 stretch almost a thousand yards from the entrance of the residence down to the entrance of the grounds.
OTHER TIDBITS: A house built on sorrow, Kimberly Crest was actually built by world traveler, Cornelia Hill, who had just lost her husband and 4 of her 6 daughters to tuberculosis! She needed a change of scenery and a home to display memories of her happier times, so she modeled this grand mansion after a home she had seen on a visit to France! She sold it in 1905 to John and Helen Kimberly. Mr. Kimberly was one of the four founders of the Kimberly-Clark Paper Company! They came to Redlands to escape the harsh winters of Wisconsin, and while Mr. Kimberly maintained the affairs of his business, Mrs. Kimberly immersed herself in the Club of Contemporary Women and founded a young ladies’ group called the ‘Kimberly Juniors!’ Their youngest daughter, Mary, continued her mother’s community work and ultimately deeded this amazing house to the City of Redlands as a public park! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
