Landmark #102 | Riverside County | Visited: August 1, 2012 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | Nothing but a Stater Bros. parking lot! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In 1844 Louis Rubidoux arrived in California with his family and, shortly thereafter, purchased the Jurupa Rancho. He became one of the most prosperous stock raisers in Southern California, and also planted orchards and vineyards, raised grain, built the first grist mill in the area, and operated a winery.
OTHER TIDBITS: Son of the man who outfitted Lewis and Clark’s expedition from St. Louis, Mr. Rubidoux came to California (it’s rumored) after winning a lot of money in a card game in Santa Fe! He is buried at another historical landmark, Agua Mansa Cemetery! |
