Landmark #690 | Kern County | Visited: January 26, 2013 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque in Bakersfield’s Mill Creek Linear Park! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Near this site stood the home of Alexis Godey, frontiersman and scout, who lived here from 1883 until his death on January 19, 1889. Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1818, he acted as guide for John C. Frémont’s expedition through the Kern area in 1843-44, and was honored for his services at the Battle of San Pasqual in 1846.
OTHER TIDBITS: Mr. Godey also led the charge at Denny Creek, where the Frémont group was attacked by tribal warriors in the night, destroying a nearby Klamath village that probably had nothing to do with the attack! He was arrested by Andrés Pico after sneaking through enemy lines with Kit Carson and Edward Beale during the Battle of San Pasqual, but was released after Pico’s surrender! |
