Mission San Luís Rey de Francia!

Mission San Luís Rey de Francia
Landmark #239 San Diego County Visited: February 10, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The refurbished 18th mission (of 21) founded by Father Fermín Francisco Lasuén!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Founded June 12, 1798 by Father Lasuén, then president of the California missions, and administered by Father Peyrí, Mission San Luís Rey is notable for its impressive architecture-a composite of Spanish, Moorish, and Mexican.

OTHER TIDBITS: This mission is named for King Louis IX of France, leader of several crusades to the Holy Land in the 13th century and patron of tertiaries (lay associates of monastic orders like the Franciscans)! It was built near the village of Tacayme to convert the Payomkowishum people, who came to be called “Luiseño” after the mission. Two of them, Pablo Tac and Agripito Amami, were personally taken to Rome by Father Antonio Peyrí to complete their training to become priests!

This was the most prosperous of California’s missions and is the last surviving cross-shaped mission church! You may also recognize it as the setting of several episodes from the 1950s TV series Zorro!

This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
