Kern River Slough Station!

Kern River Slough Station
Landmark #588 Kern County Visited: February 18, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A small stone plaque by the side of the road!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Just south of this point stood the Kern River Slough Station on the Butterfield Overland Stage route. Operating through present Kern County during 1858-1861, this famous line ran from St. Louis, Missouri to San Francisco until the outbreak of the Civil War.

OTHER TIDBITS: The Kern River slough was a stream running south from Bakersfield to Kern Lake near Arvin! Both Kern Lake and the slough have dried up because farmers have diverted all of the water!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Kern County Historical Society!
  • Donate to the Native Daughters of the Golden West!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
