What is it? | A small plaque on a bank wall, low to the ground! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In the early morning of July 9, 1846, “when the water came up to Montgomery Street,” Commander John B. Montgomery landed near this spot from the U.S. Sloop-of-War Portsmouth to raise the Stars and Stripes on the Plaza, now Portsmouth Square.
OTHER TIDBITS: By the time Captain Montgomery arrived at Yerba Buena on the morning of July 9th, there was no one to resist him or to accept a surrender. Those who had not already retired had sent all of their forces to help General José Castro against the Bear Flag Revolt in Sonoma! Captain Montgomery then sent Lt. Joseph Warren Revere to Sonoma to raise the flag there too, and set out to take possession of Yerba Buena. They accomplished their mission without firing a single shot! |
