What is it? | A plaque on a wall! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In August 1852, Abraham Brown, Thomas Bundy, Thomas Davenport, Willie Denton, Harry Fields, George Lewis, Fielding Spotts, and Eliza and William Davis organized the church in the Davis home. The congregation purchased the old First Baptist Church and moved it to this location in 1854. The church is now located at 1399 McAllister Street.
OTHER TIDBITS: This guide fails to mention that this was the first African-American Baptist church west of the Rockies! It was originally called the First Colored Baptist Church, with James W. Capen as its first pastor! Their marketing plan for new members was to perform baptisms in the San Francisco Bay itself! |
