Site of First U.S. Branch Mint in California!

Site of First U.S. Branch Mint in California
Landmark #87 San Francisco County Visited: February 23, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque on a brick wall!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The first United States branch mint in San Francisco was authorized by Congress July 3, 1852 and opened for operation April 3, 1854. Dr. L. A. Birdsall was the first superintendent, J. Huston, first minter, and A. Haraszthy, first assayer.

OTHER TIDBITS: A branch mint is just a regional satellite of a national mint! This was the first offshoot of the U.S. Mint in California and the fourth in the nation! This was the original building, which moved in 1874 to a larger, just as historic location, also known as the Granite Lady!
